A tribute to Bob Crow, RMT General Secretary

On behalf of the Official Shrewsbury 24 Campaign I would like to express how devastated and saddened we were to hear of the death of Bob Crow.

Bob was a staunch supporter of our campaign to bring about justice for the Shrewsbury pickets. Most recently he and the RMT campaigned to help us obtain signatures for our petition calling upon the Government to release all the documents relating to the Shrewsbury trials in 1973. Bob shared a platform with Ricky Tomlinson at an RMT Wrexham branch meeting on 11th December 2013 and afterwards he told me how he was constantly being hounded by the press. This was a mark of how effective he was and how the employers feared him.

Bob was convinced that his movements were monitored and that there was a concerted effort to demonise him. He said what the media did not know they made up but he was confident that this strategy would not succeed as he had full confidence in his members.

There is no doubt that the pressure on Bob was immense but he never put his own consideration first. He was proud of the RMT and all his members and their needs were paramount. He always looked to supporting working people in struggle no matter what union they belonged to or in what country they worked. He was an internationalist to his core and lived the slogan, “Working people of all countries, unite”.

The last time that many of us met Bob was on 16th December 2013 when he spoke at our press conference in Parliament and then came with us and walked up to the door of 10 Downing Street to hand in the petition.

Bob Crow was an example to us all. When we succeed in overturning the convictions of the Shrewsbury pickets Bob, like Joe Hill, will be by our side.

In solidarity
