Fund raising – legal costs

The Shrewsbury 24 Campaign aims to overturn the convictions of the Shrewsbury pickets. To do so we had to have their cases referred to the Court of Appeal. We instructed Bindmans solicitors to act for us and have obtained the services of a QC, Danny Friedman and Junior Council, Ben Newton to represent the pickets in court hearings.

We have never asked any of the pickets to contribute to the cost of instructing lawyers. In the main, we raise funds by presenting the pickets’ case to national trade unions at their executive committees and conferences, to trade union branches, trades councils and CLP’s. We ask that they affiliate /donate to the legal fund ( For details of how to to the campaign. Our committee members work for the campaign on a voluntary basis.

Our campaign researcher has obtained substantial evidential documents over the past 12 years which formed the basis of the pickets’ application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission. When the CCRC turned us down we succeeded in the Administrative Court in obtaining permission from a judge to proceed to a full judicial review hearing of the CCRC’s decision. We then succeeded at the Judicial Review hearing. In March 2020 the pickets’ convictions were finally referred to the Court of Appeal. It should be heard later this year (2020).

We now have a further four pickets cases going forward to the appeal court, making twelve in total. We are arranging for as many pickets as possible to attend the Court of Appeal hearing in London including Des Warren’s former wife, Elsa. We would ask that you continue to support us, either by affiliations or donations. We are nearly there.
